Why Riverside
In 1904, Dosan gathered Korean laborers in Riverside’s orange groves into Pachappa Camp — not a labor barracks but a self-governing community. The society founded there became the Korean National Association, and then the Provisional Government in Shanghai.
In 2017, the City of Riverside recognized the site as the first Koreatown in the United States. The memorial will stand beside it, on ten acres near California Citrus State Historic Park.
